Well, it’s been a long time coming, but we’ve finally got some screenshots to show.  Before we show them to you, though, a few things to know:

  • These are actual, live screenshots, not simply mockups.  The data is live and clickable.
  • These are not complete!  This is round one.  I’d call these about 80-85% done at this point.  They’re not pixel-perfect, some of our test data is still in there, etc.  But barring any major problems or amazing suggestions in the feedback, the final screens will look pretty much like they are shown here.
  • That said, we absolutely want your feedback on anything and everything.  We can’t promise to fit all suggestions or complaints into the final screens, but we’ll take everything under advisement.  That’s why we’ve adopted such an open design and development process.

 

We have five screenshots to share in this first round.  Each will be presented in a separate blog post (links below) in order to keep things focused.

  1. User Profile Screen and User Notes[this post] This one is first because it shows and explains most of the “common” elements on the screen.  It also shows the support for rich-text notes about a person.
  2. User Tree: Shows the “Tree” tab of the user profile with a pedigree chart.  There’s a lot going on here, so lots of notes to explain everything.
  3. Timeline:  Shows our current implementation of the Timeline view of events within a user’s lifetime.
  4. Tags: Shows and explains the concept of tags and how they can be used to associate people, places and events together in an ad-hoc manner
  5. To-Do List: Shows the implementation of a task list for work to be done related to an individual person.

 

User Profile Screen and User Notes

As mentioned previously, this screen shot is serving a dual purpose.  It describes the common elements you’ll see across the top of every screen (A through F) and also the rich text editor and the ability to add free-form notes about a user (G & H).  Each area is broken out below:

A: The profile image for the current person and their Vitals Gauge©.  The Vitals Gauge shows one measure of the completeness of your research for a person.  It looks at key facts that must be filled in for a person as well as Fact Confidence Level© (the colored bars in front of each fact) for each fact and shows a visual representation of how close you are to having reliable vital facts for that person.  The Vitals Gauge ring will be a full circle and green when you have all of the core facts filled in with a high confidence level.  It can range down through yellow for medium confidence to red for low confidence, and from the full circle down through no circle at all depending on how many of the vital facts you have filled in.  The Vitals Gauge represents just one way to see at a glance how your research is going and can be toggled on or off as you need.

B: The person’s name, ID, and relationship information to the current root user of the tree.  MRCA stands for Most Recent Common Ancestor which is the point in the tree where the current person and the root person connect – their common ancestor.  The ID listed can be one of several standard genealogy numbering systems.  See here for more details.

C: View Tabs organize information about the current person into easily navigable sections: Views, Lists and Notes.  We’ll see the content from these sections in later screen shots.

D: Breadcrumb and Navigation: this bar is present throughout Origins and helps you move about within your research.  Currently shown are links for the Dashboard, which is like the Origins homepage, a dropdown list of trees available, and then back and forward buttons which allow you to intelligently move through recent screens via a history list of what you’ve been working on.  No more scratching your head trying to figure out how to get back to the person you were just looking at a little bit ago! (Although, we’ve got some awesome search capabilities to share as we get a little further along in their development!)

E: Vital Facts: Along with the person’s name, these are the facts used by the Vitals Gauge – Date and Place for Birth, Death and Marriage.  Along with our Fact Confidence Level the colored bars in front of each Vital fact.  These can be user defined or left on Auto and Origins will rate the source for you!

F: Section Navigation: This element allows you to navigate within a tab section to see different content.  Here we see the options for navigating within the Notes section – Tags, Notes, Stories and ToDo.  We’ll see other sections in later screenshots.

G: The toolbar for the Notes rich text editor.  You use this to add visual style, lists, links, pictures, etc to your Notes.

H: The Notes content area.  This is where you type your notes about a person.  You can see the use of links, lists and colors in the sample note shown.
